Exploring the science inside what we notice

Artists and scientists have something important in common: they learn to look closely.

Both notice patterns, structures, colors, relationships, and small details that can be easy to overlook. An artist may capture the curve of a leaf vein, the strange symmetry of a moth, the texture of bark, or the way a flower opens. A scientist might begin with that same observation and ask what created it, how it works, or why it matters.

Seen Through Art begins with the artist’s eye.

Each feature highlights an independent artist and one piece of nature-inspired work. We look at what they noticed and chose to capture, then follow one of those details into the science behind it.

The goal is to use art as another way of paying attention and discovering more about the natural world.

Each feature becomes a small exploration of the space where art, observation, and science meet.

Collaboration agreement

Please read this section carefully. It defines the permission you are giving and the limits of that permission.

Your artwork remains yours.

You retain all copyright and ownership of your original artwork. You give Sinclair STEM Arts nonexclusive permission to use the submitted artwork only for the approved Seen Through Art social media feature and directly related Instagram Story promotion. Signing this agreement confirms your participation in the project. If you do not submit an artwork today, this permission applies only after you later choose and provide a specific piece for the feature.

Your work will not be altered without approval.

Sinclair STEM Arts will not substantially crop, recolor, animate, redraw, or otherwise modify the artwork without your approval. Any minor formatting needed for the carousel will appear in the draft you review.

Other uses require separate permission.

This permission does not automatically extend to:

  • the Sinclair STEM Arts website or blog
  • newsletters, printed materials, or advertisements
  • merchandise, licensing, or sale to another party
  • future campaigns or unrelated social posts

Any additional use will be discussed with you separately first.

You approve the complete feature before publication.

Sinclair STEM Arts will prepare the research, science writing, citations, accessibility text, and visual layout. You may correct information about yourself or your artwork and raise concerns about how your work is presented. Scientific interpretation and educational content remain the responsibility of Sinclair STEM Arts.

Credit remains prominent.

The feature will credit your preferred name and/or social handle and can link to your website, shop, or portfolio. When technically available and appropriate, you will be invited as an Instagram collaborator so the post may appear on both accounts.

No new work or payment is required.

This is an unpaid editorial collaboration featuring existing artwork. No fee or financial compensation is exchanged. You are not expected to create new art, research the science, write copy, or create promotional materials. Participation does not create an employment, commission, or work-for-hire relationship.

Either participant may withdraw before publication.

You may withdraw your artwork at any time before the feature is published. Sinclair STEM Arts may also conclude that a proposed piece does not fit the series' scientific or editorial direction. If either happens, there is no obligation to continue the collaboration.
